Most flexible

Fly and rent a car

A rental car is usually the easiest choice for airport transfers, lodging outside Uptown, scenic drives and day trips. Reserve early during spring, fall and holiday periods.

  • PHX has a dedicated Rental Car Center connected by the free PHX Sky Train.
  • Confirm counter hours when arriving late at a smaller regional airport.
  • A standard vehicle works for paved roads; do not take a rental car onto roads prohibited by the agreement.

Shuttles and private transfers

Intercity shuttles and prearranged transportation can connect Phoenix Sky Harbor with Sedona. Service, pickup locations and hotel stops change, so reserve directly with the provider.

  • Allow time for luggage, terminal transfers and possible shared-ride stops.
  • Confirm whether the fare includes door-to-door hotel service.
  • Book the return transfer before your departure day.

Road trip

Driving into Sedona

From Phoenix, the standard approach is I-17 north to Exit 298 and SR-179 through the Village of Oak Creek. From Flagstaff, I-17 is generally the simpler route; scenic SR-89A through Oak Creek Canyon is narrower and more weather-sensitive.

  • Weekend and holiday traffic can add substantial time near Sedona.
  • Mountain weather may affect I-17 and SR-89A in winter.
  • Check incidents and closures before leaving the airport.

Getting around Sedona

Many Uptown destinations are walkable, but Sedona is spread across Uptown, West Sedona and the Village of Oak Creek. The free Sedona Shuttle serves selected popular trailheads from park-and-ride lots on scheduled service days.

  • Use the shuttle for served trailheads instead of searching for limited parking.
  • Rideshare availability can be less predictable than in a major city.
  • Keep water in the vehicle and avoid leaving valuables visible.
